Journey to the Podium

This exhibition is a culmination of a three year project and provides, through art, a remarkable insight into the world of dedication, focus and sacrifice demanded of an aspiring Olympic and Paralympic athlete.

In the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Essex County Council established the Team Essex Ambassadors Award, which aims to support and nurture local athletes who have been identified as having the potential to compete in the London 2012 games.

To celebrate and capture talented athletes, Essex County Council’s Team annually commissioned artists to ‘Adopt an Athlete’ and create artworks that mark their journey to the podium, or at least the 2012 Games.

A Time and a Place

A recent donation of 19th century etchings and lithographs to the permanent Beecroft collection has inspired this wonderful exhibition. These works provide a snapshot of life, industry and architecture of Southend and its surrounding towns and villages.

Visitors may well be surprised that in some instances little has changed and members of the Essex based photography group 20:20 provide through their photographs an excellent and vivid comparison of how the scenes look today.
